Terminology & Definitions

Standard Mounting/Matting - The materials used for this option are less expensive, however, are still Acid Free. The mat used is composed of 100% cotton core and backing, and is Lignin and Acid Free. The mounting board is Acid Free with a foam core. If you are wondering what is the difference between an Acid Free mat and a mat whose contents contain a certain amount of acidic materials, the difference is this:  A true Acid fee mat retains the original color of the materials used in the manufacture process of the mat. Additionally, the mat does not tend to exude gases which affect the original quality and color of the photo. The usual tell-tale sign of a mat that is not Acid-Free is the core of the mat itself, usually begins to turn color, and can be seen in the cut beveled edge of the mat opening. Also, the surface of the mat may discolor slightly after several years time. In some cases, (depending on the conditions where the photo is stored), this may also affect the photo as some discoloration may become evident. For most consumers, this change is barely noticeable, as it occurs over several years time. The mats in this category are available in a 4-ply (standard mat) thickness.

Archival Quality Mounting/Matting - The materials used for this option are "museum grade", 100% cotton rag material, and are Acid-Free and Lignin-Free in content. Simply put, the chemical composition of the materials are designed so it will not damage the print on which it is used. The mounting board is also composed of 100% cotton rag, and will not  damage the print. The mat will maintain its color without discoloring the photograph, as the mounting board and mat oxidize with age. In addition to 4-ply (standard mat) thickness, the Archival Quality mats are also available in an 8-ply (double mat) thickness, for an additional charge. This 8-ply option is what is typically used to frame museum grade artwork, and is a single mat that is twice the standard thickness.
